To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Internet, DARPA, aka the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, will put citizens' social networking and digital skills to the test by challenging them to locate 10 8-foot round red weather balloons moored in undisclosed locations across the continental U.S. on December 5. $40,000 will be awarded to the first person who identifies the correct longitude and latitude of each balloon.

According to DARPA, the contest "will explore the role the Internet and social networking plays in the timely communciation, wide area team-building and urgent mobilization required to solve broad scope, time-critical problems."

See the contest rules and register for the game on the DARPA site.
